  Utah Saints Two
Rating: 3 out of 5 Rating: 3 out of 5 Rating: 3 out of 5

by Kelly Hubertus

When Jez Willis, who came from a hard-edged electronic backround (think KLF and Front 242), met with hip-hop fan Tim Garbutt in Leeds, England, Utah Saints was formed in 1991. They quickly found themselves labeled as leaders of the electronic music scene. Wanting to break away from the expectations of the band, Willis and Garbutt began recording in the studio for their second release, Two, in late '98. While the duo finished recording the disc in time for it to be released in 1999, they decided to hold out until 2000 (when the album was released in England) just for the freshness of it all—new decade, new century, new Utah Saints Album.

In Two's opening track, "Sun," one of four interludes featuring R.E.M. vocalist Michael Stipe, is recited along a soothing, mellow beat. "The sun just came out, I can't believe it." This is a great, easy-going entrance into the CD. The sure to be talked about dance anthem, "Power to the Beats," features vocal contributions from Public Enemy's Chuck D. and a sample from Metallica's "Enter Sandman". This happens to be Metallica's dance track debut, as it is the first time the metal band has cleared a sample of one of their tunes. Everything about the Utah Saints is original. These guys even tracked down Edwin Starr because they respected his anti-war anthem, "War," and got him to lay down a vocal for the appropriately titled, "Funky Music." Various artists have even featured the "Love Song" track on other mixed CDs. "Lost Vagueness" contains a sample of "I Go To Sleep," performed by The Pretenders. The sound of the future is shown through this CD.
