Ellen Allien - My Parade - Bpitch Control Records
Rating: 5 out of 5 Rating: 5 out of 5 Rating: 5 out of 5 Rating: 5 out of 5 Rating: 5 out of 5

by Russ Marshalek

Ellen Allien, electro-breaks-tech-glitch producer, proves her DJ chops as she drops My Parade, her third mix compilation released on her self-run, Bpitch Control Records. Unlike her other two previous mix albums (we're not talking her artist albums of self-made productions), My Parade starts upfront and really doesn't let up for the entirety of the mix. Opening with the gorgeous classic "Always" from Midi Rain, Ellen immediately establishes that My Parade is just that—HER show. After releasing her critically acclaimed artist LP Berlinette and an album of remixes that included both commercial hits like her deconstruction of Miss Kittin's Goth-'lectro "Rippin Kittin," as well as her reworking of her own gorgeous, "Alles Sehen," there's nothing for Ellen to prove except that, in her own words, "Techno is the only friend." She tears into newer tracks, such as Modeselektor's "Rave Anthem," with the same gleeful, hands-in-the-air joy with which she approaches the oldies (check her inclusion of "Dresden," a track released on her very first label, Brain Candy, from before half of the commercial tech DJs you're familiar with had touched their first set of Technics). It's impossible not to share in the sheer joy of a DJ at the peak of her craft diving head first into what she loves: the music.
