Blackmarket Star A Date With Electric
Rating: 2 out of 5 Rating: 2 out of 5

by Chanté LaGon

After three listens, it hit me why "Bell Swing" is the best track on Blackmarket Star's CD: It's one of the few where vocalist (and writer) Glover keeps quiet. Not that his lyrics are loud. That's the other disturbing quality about the lyrics—the hushed tone in which he says them. There is a drama in the songs, but they're of the soap opera variety.

The CD starts off strong in "Heart Song," with a deep bassline that gets you pumped for a serious drum and bass maneuver. Umm, no haps. Instead, the track limps into a pre-programmed high-hat "jungle mix" that doesn't do the first couple bars justice.

It seems like Blackmarket Star is more fit for the poetry scene than downtempo/drum and bass. Honestly though, with a couple of unexpected electric guitar riffs and housey beats, I'm not sure if that's what Glover and the crew even intended. Credit is definitely due for the thought-provoking and scenic samples that support the sounds—even though the sounds themselves aren't more than Casio sophisticated.

In the end, A Date With Electric is more like a lovelorn jaunt through halfway drum and bass.
