There's a Facebook question going around that is quite split in answers. I'm really interested in the replies here.

6÷2(1+2)

What's the answer?

if it helps you, this is really the problem you are solving, not 6 halves times (1+2)

again, this is a facebook question. this is meant to be written poorly to cause controversial answers while the advert sells you a product!

To be fair, there was no advert, but Purple Math is probably getting shit tons of ad revenue from this. Laughing

Is that the same as 6/2*(1+2)? I had to add the * in order for excel to compute that problem. It won't accept a number next to the paranthesis as multiplication.

If excel is returning the wrong answer that is a big problem...

copy and paste the actual division symbol in there

it's not that Excel is wrong, it's that the formula is being misinterpreted.

Excel does not recognize the actual division symbol, only /.

Should have linked to a rootkit installer from one of their ad servers... That would have "added up" to a lot of newly exploited systems.

According to Excel, the answer is 9.
God and Excel are pretty much the same thing.
Therefore, God says the answer is 9.

Is there really any need for further discussion?

Same here, mostly because it's a fundamental argument and not a stupid vs. intelligent one!
