by Howard Lee and Steven Lin
This interview took place in Dallas, Texas, in June 2001.
Lunar: Why the recent change in style?
Tiësto: I can't really explain it...all my music is made at the moment.
Lunar: What's your opinion on MP3, and on technology in general?
Tiësto: MP3 is a good way for people to get music, as long as the artists agree with it.
Lunar: Who is your favorite producer?
Tiësto: I don't really know or have an opinion...I haven't had time to listen to anything lately because of the constant travel.
Lunar: Who is your favorite person to collaborate with?
Tiësto: I love collaborating with everyone...like Armin, like Corsten. My favorite right now is with de Goeij (Kamaya Painters).
Lunar: Is Gouryella going to put together an album?
Tiësto: I would like to do an album with Corsten (Gouryella)...however, I want to put together my album first. Corsten has released his album, and I just want to complete mine before I do the Gouryella album.
Lunar: On In Search of Sunrise, you started with the guitar (York), which was phenomenal. Why did you choose that track to start with?
Tiësto: When I do a set for a mixed album, I really like to consider the tracks I pick and the order in which I put them together. I don't like to just put all the hits on a set.
Lunar: How about an album with Armin for Major League?
Tiësto: I dont think an album will come in the near future...Major League was a side project.
Lunar: What is your favorite venue?
Tiësto: I love all the venues, music is such a universal language. outside of Europe, I've been to South Korea...a variety of locations in America...Mexico City.... I've met and heard so many different and interesting producers, people, and DJs....
Lunar: How do you start on a new track?
Tiësto: Every gig is different, no real method.... It's how I feel at the time. Usually I have a few ideas in my head, have a few sounds together, and the track just develops as I work.
Lunar: What do you think is the future of Black Hole Recordings?
Tiësto: It was just a side project. We started it as a small kindergarten.... We want to grow, but we just don't have enough stuff yet.
Lunar: What do you listen for when listening to new producers and DJ's for Black Hole?
Tiësto: I listen for something new, with new elements, and new styles in trance.
Lunar: Are you planning to release anything in the US?
Tiësto: I have recently released a single on Nettwerk called "Flight 643." There is also a limited double vinyl version with more remixes that will be released in June. I have already released a mix cd of hand-picked tracks domestically on Nettwerk last October called Summerbreeze.
Lunar: Any new Magik releases?
Tiësto: I will be releasing International Magik soon...it will be distributed by K7! Studio in the US.
Lunar: Lastly, how do you like Texas?
Tiësto: I like it a lot! The people here are very nice. Monique and I are going to hang out in Dallas tomorrow. We plan to go to the "Grassy Knoll," have a steak, and go horseback riding!
Lunar: We should get you some boots!
